Criw Cymraeg

The Welsh Assembly Government has announced an aim to increase the number of welsh speakers in Wales to 1 million by the year 2050.

As part of this aim they have issued a charter called 'Siarter Iaith Cymraeg' - The Welsh Language Charter. The school part of this charter is called Cymraeg Campus and our first job has been to create a 'Criw Cymraeg.' Our Criw Cymraeg is made up of two children from each junior class and their role is to promote the use of the Welsh Language in our school and the wider community.

We are currently working our way towards the Silver Award and are working hard to promote Welsh in school. We hold a Welsh assembly each week and we look out for our 'Siaradwr Yr Wythnos' - we look for staff and pupils who are using Welsh in and out of school!

Who are the Student Senedd?

Wood Memorial school council are a group of children from reception all the way up to year six that gather into the school’s staff room and make different decisions every day. Our earliest decisions were based on school policies including substance misuse, equality and diversity, food and fitness and personal development and relationships. On some days the school council go back to their classes and have a class council meeting to ask the children of the class for their thoughts of the agenda. The council will bring the requests back to the staff room and then the school council will take and discuss the ideas in a another meeting.

How often do we meet?

We meet regularly in the staff room. Our job is to represent our classes and views of other children. The chairman gives out things for the school council to do like asking for a sum of money from the head teacher or to write a letter to somebody that has been discussed in the agenda of the meeting.

What changes have we made?

We have made changes to all of Wood Memorial School, introducing new games played on the playground and the field and even ordering new equipment for the P.E store. We have organised lots of events too.

What will we be doing in the future?

In the future we will be looking at other ways to make Woody even better. That means we have to talk to all the other children and see what ideas they have. Every year, new children join the Senedd and we begin different projects.
